David Spriggs (b. 1978, Manchester, England) is a Canadian artist recognized for his large-scale, three-dimensional installations that exist at the intersection of two and three dimensions. Through a unique process he pioneered in 1999—layering transparent images—Spriggs explores themes of perception, space-time, color theory, surveillance, and the symbolism of power. His immersive works often appear ephemeral and weightless, challenging the viewer’s spatial awareness and inviting a reconsideration of form and visual systems.
Spriggs immigrated to Canada in 1992 and currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. He earned his Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University in Vancouver. He has also participated in academic residencies at Central Saint Martins in London (1999) and Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany (2006).
His work has been exhibited widely at institutions including Messums Wiltshire (UK), Arsenal Contemporary Art (Montreal), the Prague Biennale 5 (Czech Republic), the Louis Vuitton Gallery (Macau), and the Sharjah Biennial 9 (UAE). Spriggs’ installations are held in prominent public and private collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, and Hotel VIC in Hong Kong.
